Reading the Bible with the Church
The Bible is the Church's book. It was written in the Church, preserved by the Church, and read aloud in the Church every week. That shapes how we read it. We do not read alone, as if we had to work everything out ourselves. We read with those who came before us, and with those next to us.
Start with prayer
Before you open your Bible, pause and ask God to speak. A short prayer is enough: "Lord, open my heart to understand Your word." Then read slowly, a short passage at a time. The goal is not to cover a lot, but to meet Christ.
Tip: Read a few verses twice, and notice which phrase stays with you.
Follow the Church's readings
The Church reads Scripture on a set rhythm through the year. Each day has assigned readings from the Gospels, the Epistles, the Psalms and more. They are gathered in a book called the Katameros. You can see today's Church readings in Doxali, then read the chapter in full.
Where to begin
If you are new, start with a Gospel. Mark is the shortest. John is deeply personal. Doxali has plans for each, from Mark in 16 days to longer ones. After that, try a Psalm each day.
The Church's Bible
The Coptic Orthodox Church receives the Old Testament as it was read by the early Church, which includes books such as Wisdom and Sirach. Many Bibles you find in shops leave these out. Doxali includes translations that have them.
Read with the Fathers
When a passage puzzles you, you do not have to solve it alone. The Fathers of the Church, such as St. Athanasius, St. John Chrysostom and St. Cyril, wrote commentaries and homilies to help us. Your priest or a servant can point you to good ones.
Try this: Write down one question you have about the passage and ask it at church.
Keep it simple and regular
Ten minutes a day, at the same time, will do more for you than an hour once a month. Use a plan if it helps, and let yourself start again when you miss a day.
Quick questions
Which translation should I use?
Choose one that is clear to you, and ask your priest for a recommendation.
What if I do not understand what I read?
That is normal. Keep reading, keep your questions, and ask.
Can I read the Bible aloud?
Yes. Listening is a good way to read, and Doxali can read chapters aloud.
